The Sámi indigenous people have more than 300 different words for describing snow, many of them directly related to skiing. “Gálav” means conditions where the skis sink deep in the snow.
We are based in Arctic Norway and use elements from the Nordic tradition of “friluftsliv” when guiding, like using local mountain huts, tents or snow caves on multi-day tours.
On our ski tours we try to only leave tracks behind, and only take memories with us. Our knowledge of the local history and culture at the places we visit gives an enhanced experience for our guests.
As for the Sámi reindeer herders a changing climate and changing winters has made life more difficult for skiing enthusiasts, but we usually manage to find good snow conditions.
