Description
Not many regions in the world offer a comparable variety in skiing experience as those available in the Narvik area. Within just over an hour’s train or car travel from the city of Narvik you get access to close to 100 ski touring summits, with many options starting at sea level and ending up on summits more than 1500 meters above sea level.
With a population of 18.000 Narvik is a lively city with hotels, restaurants, cinemas and nightclubs. It also has a ski resort, Narvikfjellet, within walking distance from the city center. Narvikfjellet has been selected as the host of the Alpine World Championships in 2029. This means that the town and the ski resort is currently preparing for hosting this event, with big plans for improving and expanding the lift-accessed skiing and snowboarding.
The variety in terrain to be found around Narvik means that we can adapt to the current weather and snow conditions. If it is snowing and there is bad visibility – we do some tree skiing (we have many good spots with trees up to 600 meters above sea level). If the snow cover at sea level is poor – we start higher up (we have several roads that give access to higher elevated terrain). If it is overcast and bad visibility – we can often find another option with better weather (it is often different when you move to the next fjord or over to the high mountain terrain in Sweden).
Some of our touring options
Spanstinden
Spanstinden is a real classic and a very popular destination among ski touring enthusiasts from all over the world. The tour up is on the sunny south side of the mountain. Since the start of the tour is pretty high up, the snow still lasts until late in the season. The final section to the
summit is really spectacular and with an amazing view over several fjords.
Stetinden
The mountains surrounding Stetinden, Norway’s national mountain, offer excellent ski touring options of different length and difficulty. Stetinden has a special place in Norwegian climbing history, as well in the Norwegian environmental movement. The scenery and history is often as memorable as the skiing when ski touring in this area.
Rombakstøtta
As you approach Narvik from the north, Rombakstøtta will catch your eye. This mountain
is Narvik’s Matterhorn. You’d think that only a team of expert mountaineers would be able to reach the summit, but, in fact, there are only a few short, easy sections where you have to use your hands for upward progress. This is a classic ski touring summit with fantastic views and relatively easy skiing!
Tredjetoppen
Using the lifts in Narvikfjellet to access the varied terrain around the summit Tredjetoppen will give us a lot of skiing for a relatively small amount of walking uphill. There are many backcountry skiing and snowboarding options around Tredjetoppen, with different levels of difficulty. Since we have detailed knowledge of the mountain, we can take you to spots few others are able to find.
Loktačohkka
The mountain Loktačohkka is located in the Swedish part of the region, accessed by a short drive or train ride from Narvik. It is a mountain with several ski touring options of different difficulty. A ski tour here is usually combined with a lunch break at Låktatjåkkastugan cabin, the highest mountain station in Sweden and famous for it’s delicious wafles.
